Five ways to be a 'lady' in the 21st century - William Hanson
Societal rules and behaviours had died a death in this time of ours but there is still a hunger from some women and men to know the ‘rules of society’. Etiquette tutor, William Hanson (23), offers his take on the five most important rules of being a modern day lady.
Unexpectedly though, you may not love what you read especially when it comes to the ‘correct skirt length’...
Here are The English Manner’s senior tutor, William Hanson’s top tips for how to be a 21st century lady. Wade in with your views below.
1. A lady at the table
A true lady knows that she is expected to begin eating first, before the men. Do not hang back or faff around, as a true gentleman will just sit there watching his food go cold as you carry on nattering.

2. Turn the table!
A much forgotten about skill of a lady at a dinner was 'turning the table'. Her Majesty The Queen is still an advocate of this, and more ladies should follow her lead. This involves speaking to people either side of you, one after the other. So for the first course, a lady speaks to the man on her left; for the second course, the man on her right, and it switches. No one ever talks across the table - as historically tables were much wider than they are now.
3. Avoid mean gossip
Although it can be very tempting to have a quiet gossip about a friend or acquaintance, it is not a good sign to others (even if they are joining in!) If you are freely gossiping about person X, others will begin to worry if you openly gossip about them to others too.
4. Less is always more!
Do not feel that you need to show oodles of flesh, leg or cleavage. For social occasions, then you can wear something a little more revealing, but the professional environment, let your business acumen shine, without having to compensate. Skirts and dresses should not really rise too far above the knee – but if necessary, then please do wear dark coloured tights.
5. Don’t abuse the booze
Women are generally better at this than men, but severe drunkenness, followed by raucous behaviour, has fast become the scourge of British society. It is always saddening to see men and women falling over in the streets on a Saturday night all over the UK and getting into fights. A few drinks are fine – but please don’t lose control.
